Slovenia: Cycling from Work with GeoCaching

Rok and me cycled home from our work place and on the way we decided to search for 3 GeoCaches. They were all quickly found.

By the stream in the middle of Zgornje Gameljne, just outside Ljubljana, stands a fascinating house. Wooden, with a balcony running all the way round it, it has yellow walls and green window frames. A house of curious architecture is the only Russian dacha in Slovenia and a location of our first GeoCache today. read more in this article on page 70.

The Smlednik castle, also known as Stari grad (Old Castle), situated on a hill above the village, is believed to have been built in the 11th century to serve as a fortress and was constantly expanded until 1610. As the castle was the centre of an extensive estate, it was claimed by a number of noble families in addition to the original owners, the Counts of Weimar-Orlamünde, including the Counts of Andechs and the Counts of Cilli; they used the castle to house their caretakers, who were in charge of protecting the vital trade route from Kamnik to Škofja Loka and on to Italy. Since the castle was not expanded or renovated after this period, its remains serve as the purest demonstration of how the construction of a medium-sized Slovenian castle developed through the years. source: http://www.tzm.si/naravne-kulturneEN.php

The Blood Shrine in Valburga was a place, where our last geocache was hidden. A shrine is marking a medieval execution site in the fields behind the church in Valburga.
