Slovenia: Cycling with GeoCaching around Bela krajina (White Carniola), Day 1

Nada and me decided to have another cycling weekend and her home area, Bela krajina, was our choice. Since a long way was ahead of us, we planned a couple of stops near River Kolpa and a couple of them for GeoCaching.

River Kolpa in Prelesje

River Kolpa, zoomed in

New road just outside of the village Špeharji

Sinjevrški kal, a shallow basin in karst ground where rainwater collects. Water does not seep into the interior of the territory, because the bottom is covered with an impermeable layer of clay or loam.

River Kolpa at another place, Griblje

It started to rain just before the end of our trip so we stopped in a hunting watch tower, where I took a nap.

It stopped raining so we were able to continue. We stopped by Nada's friend Jasmina and she served us with a delicius home made goodies.

GeoCaching may also be educational. This time we stopped by steam locomotive JŽ 25-018, that was produced in Vienna (Austria) in 1921. This type of locomotives were pulling trains in Slovenia and Venezia Giulia (Italy). This particular steam locomotive was used to run a partisan electric power station in Črnomelj in years 1944 and 1945. Technical data: lenght 17,3 m, weight 78,2 t, speed 60 km/h, power 660 kW (900 HP)

GeoCaching took us to another interesting location, near aged DC-3 plane. Plane of the Yugoslav National Army was set years ago as a memory of the provisional partisan airport during the war in a settlement called Otok. The English and Americans used to fly the injured from Bela krajina, which was liberated territory, to Allied hospitals in Italy during World War II as well as send weapons and other materials to the partisans.
