Slovenia: Hike to Trdinov vrh
After the breakfast in Bela krajina (White Carniola), Nada and me decided to do a hike to Trdinov vrh, 1178 m.
On our way to the starting point of our hike we stopped at Kal Grabrna (Pond Grabrna) in Dolnja Lokvica. The pond is the work of human hands and is now one of the few still preserved ponds in Bela Krajina. |
After a short detour we parked our car in Gabrje, from where we started the hike. Our fist destination was Planinski dom pri Gospodični mountain hut, 822 m, and after a short photo session we continued towards the top.
Gospodična spring, which will return your energy and youth. Average flow is 5 l/min. |
The peak lies at the border between Slovenia and Croatia. Croatia have a chapel dedicated to Sveti Ilija (Saint Elijah). |
On the Slovenian side we have a Church dedicated to Sveta Jera (Saint Gertrude). The church was first mentioned in a document in 1447. Today only the ruins are visible. Above the ruins the new roof was built in 2012. |
The communication tower on the top of Trdinov vrh. The peak was originally called Sveta Gera in Croatian and Sveta Jera in Slovenian (Mount St. Gertrude) after the 15th-century church of Saint Gertrude some hundred meters from the highest point of the peak. In 1923, however, the president of the Novo Mesto Mountaineering Club Ferdinand Seidl proposed to rename it after Janez Trdina, an ardent describer of the region. On 15 August 1923, the peak was ceremonially renamed by a Slovene girl, while the accompanying ecclesiastic rituals were performed by a Croatian priest. |
