Slovenia: Motorcycling, hiking along Rupnik's line, Geocaching and Dan mladosti

Today's Sunday turned out to be another memorable one. Early in the morning, I fired up my motorcycle Blue Horse and set off on a scenic ride through Kropa, Jamnik, Železniki, and Davča before reaching Gorenja vas. There, I took a break from riding to explore a section of the Rupnik Line, one of Slovenia's most fascinating military heritage sites. The Rupnik Line is a system of fortifications built by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the late 1930s as a defensive barrier against a possible Italian invasion. Stretching across western Slovenia, it consists of bunkers, tunnels, observation posts, and defensive positions. Although the line was never fully completed or used as originally intended, many of its structures have survived and today offer an interesting glimpse into the country's pre-World War II history. Along the hike, I also managed to log quite a few geocaches, making the stop even more enjoyable (Garmin Connect). The ride home followed a more relaxed route across the plains, passing through Škofja Loka and Kranj.

As today is also Dan Mladosti - Youth Day, we kept up a long-standing tradition with our neighbors. Every year, my neighbor Rajko and I take charge of preparing dinner, and this time we decided on a Serbian-themed evening. The menu featured delicious Serbian specialties, great company, and plenty of laughter. Once again, it turned into one of those evenings that remind you how good food and good friends are the perfect combination to end a fantastic day. Our previous dinners: 2024 - 16442 - Italian, 2023 - 16078 - Spanish, 2022 - 15714 - Moroccan and in 2013 - 12384.

I started in with the hike along the Rupnik's line in Gorenja vas.

One of the preserved fortifications of the Rupnik Line, a defensive system built by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the period leading up to WWII. The fortifications were intended to serve as a defence line against potential attacks, with underground bunkers and military positions spread throughout western Slovenia. Today, the Rupnik Line Theme Trail allows visitors to retrace the construction of the line and discover its fascinating history and people.

Those fortifications were part of sector 3 of Rupnik's line, that served as border enhancement between Škofja Loka and Vrhnika.

The line was inadequately prepared for the Axis invasion that took place in April 1941, as its construction was expected to conclude in 1947. The Yugoslav military budget was largely exhausted by the time of the invasion, and both attacking forces had a superior military force. As a consequence, the line was poorly defended and largely abandoned during the incursion of Italy and Germany.

The Rupnik Line was largely inspired by the Maginot Line, the extensive system of fortifications built by France along its border with Germany after World War I.

The route along this section of the Rupnik Line follows a beautiful forest trail, making it an enjoyable hike that combines history with the tranquility of nature.

Several types of bunkers were built along the Rupnik Line, each serving a specific defensive purpose. These included machine-gun bunkers for defending key approaches, artillery bunkers equipped with heavier weapons, observation posts used to monitor enemy movements, command bunkers for coordinating defenses, and underground shelters for troops and supplies. Many of the larger fortifications were interconnected by tunnels and designed to withstand heavy artillery fire.
