Slovenia: Cycling Gorenjska

Dejan and I are getting ready for the cycling event "Diagonala 335", and as part of our preparation, we decided to join one of the official training rides. This particular route took us across Gorenjska - although, technically, we also rode through the Primorska region. But more about that another time. We met in Radovljica, where six riders gathered for the start. Most of them were riding high-end bikes, while the two of us stood out a little in that department. Needless to say, that didn't exactly help with our confidence at the beginning. Still, we lined up, clipped in, and set off. Our first section took us towards Leše, beneath Dobrča, before continuing in the direction of Kranjska Gora. There, we stopped for some refreshments and a bit of fuel before taking on the main challenge of the day - Vršič Pass. That climb quickly made it clear that most of the group was playing in a different league from me. But the important thing was that we all made it over the pass successfully. From there, we enjoyed the descent down the Primorska side and continued riding together towards Postaja near Most na Soči - Garmin Connect. At the train station, we loaded our bikes onto the train and headed towards Bohinjska Bistrica. From there, we had a short ride to Lake Bohinj, where a well-deserved plate of pasta was waiting for us. After refuelling and taking a few photos, we continued on and completed the loop back to Radovljica. The cycling day wasn't over for Dejan and me, since we still had to pedal our way to his home in Brezje - Garmin Connect. A long day, plenty of kilometres, a serious climb, great scenery, and good company - exactly the kind of training day we needed.

Start in Radovljica.

First kilometers.

Very good sign, that it will be cold in the mountains.

Snack stop in Kranjska Gora.

Attacking the Vršič Pass, 1611 m.

When I made it to the pass, the others were already on our way to the valley. It was really cold here.
