Slovenia: MTB - Trans Karavanke, Day 2
The Trans Karavanke MTB Trail extends from Jezersko to Tromeja. It mostly runs along forest roads on the sunny slopes of the Karawanks, and only climbs to a ridge and the border with Austria at its westernmost point, Peč, or Tromeja.
On our second day the hikers also had a more direct route towards our destination, Dom na Zelenici, while we, the bikers, descended to Tržič, back into the civilization. After some sightseeing and an ice cream we had a long ascend to our endpoint, Dom na Zelenici mountain hut.
Start of the biking on day 2. Vinko's cycling shoes were unique, but handy. You never have wet socks, you don't need extra socks and you easily wash your shoes.

Kurnik's House - the oldest house in Tržič and a valuable testimony to what houses were like in the past in Tržič. |
It all began with the dragon. He came to life deep inside the mountain of Košuta. When he grew into a huge beast it split the mountain in two. This triggered a rumbling rock avalanche that buried the settlement below the mountain. To save themselves the inhabitants ran into the valley. After a time they ran out of breath and stopped. This is where the present-day town of Tržič grew and developed.

The Ljubelj concentration camp was built in 1943 on both sides of the Ljubelj Pass as a subsidiary camp to the Mauthausen concentration camp. By the end of the war, approximately 1800 prisoners had to dig a tunnel through the Karavanke Mountains. Around 40 people died from hard labor or were executed.
Crematorium and monument with the inscription J'accuse.
Mateja found the cypripedium calceolus - lady's-slipper orchid - lepi čeveljc, a protected flower in Slovenia.

For final ascent, we needed to push the bikes. |
After we reached our final destination, Dom na Zelenici mountain hut, we visited BG in nearby hut. And then the rain started. Some hikers weren't so lucky and they came back all wet.
It was hailing outside, but we were safe.
