Italy: Poggio Ai Tre Molini - Acquedotto Colognole

For the New Year vacation, Nada, Bronco and me decided to have a trip to Tuscany, Italy. Today we had a nice hike, where we explored the aqueduct Acquedotto Colognole, that provided and cleaned the water for Livorno from 1816 to 1912 and on the way we also visited the remains of the windmills of Poggio Tre Molini.

Our previous days in Tuscany: Day 4 - 15931, Day 3 - 15930, Day 2 - 15929 and Day 1 - 15928.

We totally loved our new home and it's location.

Our hike began in Colognole.

Once more, we were almost alone on the whole trail.

Navigating with the help of the modern compass.

In 1742 Mr. Filippo Tidi (family who owned water mills on the Rio Ardenza) began building six windmills and ten years later the first one was finished.

The mills were used to grind the wheat, while sailors also used them for navigation.

Unfortunately, they stand on some private land now and they are not accessible.

Bronco was hungry, but we didn't give him the strawberry tree berries.

Finally we arrived to the aqueduct.

Nada, Tuši and Bronco.

The Colognole aqueduct, also known as the "Leopoldino aqueduct" or "Poccianti aqueduct", winds along a route of eighteen kilometres which, from the Colognole springs, crossing the Livorno hills, reaches the city of Livorno, with a difference in altitude two hundred and fifty meters.

Along the route of the aqueduct, conceived by Pasquale Poccianti as a sort of "walk" that led from the city to the nearby hilly areas, it is possible to observe the grandeur of this work, made up of spectacular viaducts, tunnels and over three hundred and fifty arches.

Although still partially operational, several sections of the aqueduct are today in conditions of serious deterioration due to poor maintenance of the structures.

It was interesting to walk on slippery stones.

It is really interesting to walk along such a long structure.

The last buildings, before we left the forest.

We finished our trip back in Colognole - Garmin Connect.

Tuscany from our car.

Beautiful hills, scenery and weather resulted in a perfect day.

Back at home, some went to bed, while some played rummy.
