Austria / Slovenia: Geocaching

The group of 9 people from Slovenia (Shy78, krossnik, mirobori, tomislav68, Pustolovci, tusi79, tigi67, tomsetki and NiSEM) continued with geocaching on Sunday. After the breakfast we explored the area around Stainz and then we slowly moved towards back home and picking caches on our way. Along with yesterday's Matrix 81 day (14569), we had a great weekend.

Interesting things on our way

Schloss Stainz is a former monastery of the Augustinian Canons and today the  Baroque complex belongs to the Counts of Meran.

 

We crossed the creek Stainzbach

 

In 1840 Archduke Johann, son of Leopold II and an avid hunter, purchased the building complex from the town for the sum of 40,000 guilders for use as a hunting box, known thereafter as Schloss Stainz.

 

Today, besides offering gardens and rooms to rent for engagements, the castle houses two collections from the Universal Museum Joanneum.

On 16 September 2006 the Steirisches Jagdmuseum ("Styrian Hunting Museum") was opened, while the Landwirtschaftsmuseum Schloss Stainz ("Museum of Agriculture and Forestry")  was opened 3 years later.

 

The monastery was dissolved in 1785 as part of the rationalist reforms of the Emperor Joseph II. The church however remained in use.
