Slovenia / Italy: Backcountry Skiing - Prestreljenik

Easter Monday is usually reserved for skiing with my friends from AO Tržič and Chera Hiking and this year our destination was Prestreljenik. Mount Prestreljenik (Italian: Monte Forato) is a 2499-meter mountain in the western range of the Julian Alps and is the second-highest peak in the central part of the Kanin group. Prestreljenik is known for the Window (Okno), an erosion-arch feature located on its western ridge. This aperture is the source of both of the mountain's local endonyms; Prestreljenik means "shot-through" in Slovene, and Forato is Italian for "pierced". We all had a great day on skis and so we officially closed the backcountry skiing season for this winter.

In the morning we drove to Na Žlebeh (Sella Nevea) in Italy, where we bought the tickets for a gondola, that took us to Rifugio Celso Gilberti, located on 1850 meters above sea level.

After a short descent, we put on our climbing skins and started ascending towards saddles Prevala and later on saddle Škrbina pod Prestreljenikom.

It was a little bit icy, some some decided to use the ski crampons, while some of us struggled for a while, until we reached the sunny side of the mountain.

Marija joined us on top and after a group photo we descended to D station.

Čera, Tomaž, Tuši and Bađo.

Since the season was almost finished, we convinced the chairlift manager, to give us a free lift back to the saddle.
