Ukraine: Road Trip Day 8 -  Palanok Castle in Mukachevo and Way Back Home

Every trip has to end some time and our ended today. Luckily we still had some time in the morning and we visited the Palanok Castle in Mukachevo. After the sightseeing we packed ourselves in the van and a long drive home began.

Since the castle was still closed in the morning, we had to wait for a while. Meanwhile I picked up a quick geocache.

The founding cornerstone for the castle was laid sometime in the 14th century by the members of the Hungarian noble family Aba and was an important fortification of the Kingdom of Hungary throughout the centuries. The castle was later transformed into an impregnable fortress by French engineers.

Since the 16th century, Austria and Transylvania constantly fought for Palanok Castle, and due to this it often changed its owners. In the year 1633, it passed to Transylvanian Prince Dyerd Rakocziy, who turned the Mukachevo fortress in the centre of his princedom. Under his rule, defensive facilities were actively renewed and rebuilt. Old or, Upper Castle was reconstructed, and two more castles - Middle and Lower - were built near it.

As it stands today, the Mukachevsky “Palanok” Castle covers an impressive area of some 14,000 square meters. It has 130 spacious rooms, each with their own unique use, and as with many ancient and mysterious castles there are underground passages that connect all the rooms in the castle. For protection the castle has a moat, and a staggering 164 cannons ward off anyone who nears its grounds.
