In the morning I took a quick walk with Bronco on the
seaside and then I had to drove my car to
Gračac, so that it will be available there when we end our hiking trip over the
Velebit mountain range, hopefully in 10 days. Aleš also drove there with his car, so we could return back to Stinica. On the way back we stopped in Baške Oštarije, where we left some food. Our Velebit hiking trail runs across that village, so we thought it is a good idea to leave some weight there. In the evening we started the barbecue and the day quickly turned into night.

In order to transport logs from Velebit, Kombinat Velebit from Rijeka financed the construction of a freight cable car from Veliki Alan to Stinica in 1957, and it was built by prisoners from Goli otok. The cable car was 6,300 meters long, had 60 steel poles and three stations. The loading station was in Veliki Alan, the corner in Dundović Podi, and the unloading station in the sawmill and port of Stinica. It worked until 1968, when the Stinica sawmill also stopped working. After the cable car stopped working, the facility was left at the mercy of the mountain. The former log house has been converted into the "Alan" Mountain House, the neglected cable car carriers like unusual metal creatures welcome the many visitors who visit Alan and tell the story of another attempt by man to tame the mountain, which Velebit did not allow him this time. All the equipment was left to decay, devastation, theft of secondary raw materials, so that there is very little left of all that gives a hint of its former existence. |
