Slovenia: With Bikes to Nova Gorica

Last year (14581) some of us went with bikes to Nova Gorica and this year we continued the tradition. Nada also joined us and for the uverture we had a romantic breakfast for sunrise at Jamnik. Sounds very romantic, but getting up at 3:30 in the morning actually isn't. After a while we continued over Dražgoše to our meeting point in Železniki, where we formed a group, consisting of Nada, Tomaž, Rok, Vlado, Grega and me. First mini stage led us to Petrovo Brdo, 2nd mini stage was a descend to Postaja near Most na Soči. After the beer we ascended to Čepovan, following the final downhill section to Nova Gorica. The main cycling part was over, so we filled our bellies with food and fluids. We followed the plan and boarded the train in Nova Gorica that took us back to Upper Carniola, to Bled. We said goodbye to Grega and Tomaž, while we continued to Podbrezje, where Nada and me started our journey in the morning and ended it now.

 

4 a.m. in the morning. Even camera was sleeping at that time.

Uphill section in Kropa, known for its traditional smithies, warmed us up.

The church of St. Primus and Felicianus on the hill of Jamnik has a wonderful view of the mountains. Nada and me added the romantic breakfast at sunrise to it.

Quick stop at St. Gertrude church at at the base of Jelovica plateau.

We were still early, so we visited the World War 2 monument in Dražgoše, where Battle of Dražgoše took place.

The battle took place between January 9 and January 11, 1942. The battle ended with brutal reprisals of German forces against the villagers and the destruction of the village.

 

We grouped in Železniki and Petrovo Brdo was our first destination. Grega and Tomaž were among the first ones on the top.

After I repaired the front wheel flat, I soon followed them.

We took the train from Nova Gorica to Bled.

 

We returned from Slovene Littoral (Primorska) to Upper Carniola (Gorenjska) through Bohinj tunnel, that was built in 1905.
