Slovakia: Backcountry Skiing in Vysoké Tatry (High Tatras), Day 1

After driving for 9 hours, we arrived late at night to Stará Lesná, where we stayed over the night and in the morning the game started, our 4 days of backcountry skiing in High Tatras.

The High Tatras, having 29 peaks over 2,500 metres AMSL are, with the Southern Carpathians, the only mountain ranges with an alpine character and habitats in the entire 1,200 kilometres length of the Carpathian Mountains system.

In the morning we drove to Starý Smokovec, where we left our van and then we took the Starý Smokovec–Hrebienok funicular to Hrebienok, 1285 m. Then we put on our skis and started walking uphill. The group splitted and Igor, Slavc and me conquered a saddle called Malý Závrat, 2270 m, while others were also searching for their piece of powder. From there we skied to our destination at Zbójnicka Chata (http://zbojnickachata.sk/) mountain hut, 1960 m. We settled in and then the relaxation minutes began.

Getting ready in Starý Smokovec. The magnificent seven: Jure, Slavc, Milan, Tuši, 100jan, Igor and Borut.

We bought the funicular ticket and after the ride, we were ready for adventures on the snow

Our hut was 2:50 away.

Plenty of snow in our direction

The first European cross-border national park was founded here - Tatra National Park - with Tatra National Park (Tatranský národný park) in Slovakia in 1948, and Tatra National Park (Tatrzański Park Narodowy) in Poland in 1954, therefore the huts are supplied only like this.

Evening in the hut was also tough
