Slovenia: Hike of the Year: Crossing the Košuta mountain ridge

For many years I had a plan to cross the Košuta ridge and this year the wish came true. Košuta is the mightiest and homogeneous massif in the central part of the Karawanks. It is 10 km long and has six large independent peaks over 2000 m high. I gathered the group of six people and we started at 4:30 a.m.

Start was still in the dark, but we had the moon above us

Towards our first peak, Košutica

View from Košutica reached all the way to our highest mountain Triglav

First 1000 meters (height) finished

Down and up, up and down for more than 10 hours

2nd peak, Veliki vrh, was already above 2000 meters

Kladivo, 2094 m a.m.s.l.

View from Kladivo to the ridge west and east from us. We already did the western part. The ridge is also a border between Slovenia and Austria.

More than 35 degrees Celsius exhausted us a little

Borut, Badžo, Tomaž, me, Maja, Tadej and Rok on our last and highest mountain, Košutnikov Turn, 2133 m. Only a descent for 700 meters to Planina Spodnja Dolga njiva was infront of us.

After 10 hours and 20 minutes we did it. Fresh water, cold beers and food filled us with a little bit of energy. Friends, Tanja and Meta, came up here with the kids and after a short hike to the cars they drove us back home.

Unforgettable hike, Košuta ridge
