Slovenia: MTB - Nanos, Orlek

It was quite a full day today. In the morning, Grega picked me up and we met with Nina and Elvis in Razdrto, where we started our MTB trip to Nanos. First, we descended to a village called Podnanos, and then our ascent began. We started on a nice zig-zagging asphalt road, but as we approached the top, we switched to a gravel road, where we were met with fog, cold, and wind. We were all happy when we finally spotted Vojkova koča na Nanosu, and we didn't hesitate to go inside and warm up. Some hearty local food helped us recharge, and we even got to witness a small celebration where local members of the TIGR movement sang a few old songs. Eventually, it was time to move on, and we continued toward the northwest part of the plateau. On the way, we visited Mali Vipavski ledenik, and then we set our compasses back toward our starting point. We made one more stop in the village of Strane, where we visited the oldest yew trees in Slovenia, before finally returning - seven hours after we had started - Garmin Connect.

After the ride, I met up with Nada and we went to the Orlek concert at Kino Šiška. They were celebrating their 35th anniversary - and they still know how to throw a great rock 'n' roll party!

Something was cooking at the top of Nanos, but that couldn't stop us.

View to Vipava valley.

Zig-zagging.

Vojkova koča mountain hut  is located on the southern edge of the Nanos plateau.

Let's quickly escape from the cold weather.

The southern slopes of the Nanos plateau descend steeply into the Vipava Valley.

My crew: Grega, Elvis and Nina.

Lovely riding.

Nothing shields you from the wind better than the forest.

Mali Vipavski ledenik was once used for ice harvesting. Blocks of ice from caves like this were even exported to cities such as Gorizia, Trieste, and as far as Egypt.

Sign on the road that led us to the cave.

In the village of Strane stands the Church of St. Cross, next to the ancient "Hieronim Yew." This remarkable tree reaches 13 meters in height, has a trunk circumference of 380 cm, and is estimated to be 1500 - 1600 years old. According to legend, St. Hieronim, along with Saints Cyril and Methodius, preached here in 865 on their way to Rome. The connection to St. Hieronim may not be coincidental, as the famous pilgrimage church of St. Hieronim also stands on the western side of the Nanos Plateau.

One more photo of the WW2 monument and we were ready to finish our trip.

Quick bite at a nearby Chinese restaurant before the concert.

Orlek is celebrating 35 years in 2024. The band formed at the end of the 1980s, specifically in 1989, and they consider their official beginning to be the recording of their first demo tracks at the radio station Radio Trbovlje. They won us over with their unique mix of rock 'n' roll, brass, horns, and accordion - a distinctive "folk punk polka rock" - featuring socially and humorously charged lyrics and energetic stage performances that often include Slovenian folk and popular traditional songs.

Nada and Tuši.

Special guest on stage: Vlado Kreslin.

Orlek was formed in Zagorje ob Savi, the heart of the mining region, at the end of the 1980s. The Tori brothers (Jure and Mitja) and Ivo Vidergar invited Vlado Poredoš, who had recently moved to Zagorje, to join the band.

Their first "hit" was the song Laubitch Walz, but they gained nationwide recognition in 1995 with the song Adijo, knapi, an ode to miners and mining, which remains one of their biggest and most requested songs to this day.

2x Vlado.

Another awesome concert.
