Slovenia: Geocaching in Dolenjska

I had to perform some electrical tests according to LV124 standard for my company, and since the equipment was in Novo mesto, I drove there. I quickly performed the necessary tasks and then it was time to explore Novo mesto and Trebnje area through geocaching.

First I visited the grave of Julija Primic, a poetic muse of our greatest poet, France Prešeren, followed by a visit of the ruins of the Rok's church.

The largest castle in Novo mesto, which also suffered the most visible changes over the passage of time, is Castle Grm (the Bush Castle). It stands at the top of the Grm hill, and features a beautiful tree-lined avenue, the beginnings of which extend to the 16th century.

Castle Grm was built in 1586 by Krištof Mordax, a nobleman of the old Carniolan-Carinthian-Styrian family, who had previously owned the Graben ob Krki manor near Novo mesto.

Trebnje Castle is a smaller castle located in a town Trebnje, positioned on a plateau on the right bank of river Temenica. Sources claim that the castle was built around year 1000, which makes it one of the oldest Slovenian castles.

On my way to Trebni vrh I entered the Velika jama (Big cave).

The Velika jama cave is about 118 m long (according to the data of the Cave Cadastre) and 16 m deep.

There is some cave decoration in it (curtains, the beginnings of stalactite formation ...), but unfortunately it is also looted.

The Baraga path led me on top of Trebni vrh, 581 m.

Just below the peak lies the village Vrhtrebnje.

The stone marker of the 15th Meridian at Vrhtrebnje is built at a point offering a panoramic view. A stone table supports a bronze relief of Slovenia showing the principal towns and peaks, at the course of the 15th Meridian.

Sundial on the 15th meridian.

The clock didn't work today, so I continued walking on the Baraga's trail.

My circular path led me back to Trebnje.

Irenaeus Frederic Baraga (June 29, 1797 – January 19, 1868) was a Slovenian Roman Catholic missionary to the United States and a grammarian of Native American languages. In 2012, during the reign of Pope Benedict XVI, Baraga was declared "Venerable."

For the end of the day I visited 2 partisan World War II monuments, one in Trebnje and one nearby, where one of the battles took place on 18th April 1942.
