Croatia: The Olive Trail and Krk

The olive trees are one of the landmarks of the island of Krk. The city of Krk is completely surrounded by olive groves, which can easily be explored by following one of two olive oil paths. We chose the shorter one, that leads to Lakmartin. From there we returned back and also explored the city and for the end of the day we enjoyed the seafood in the local restaurant.

Frankopan Castle on Kamplin was raised by Croatian noble family of Frankopan through several centuries and several generations. The inscription on the lunette over the entrance confirms that the building was raised in 1191.

 

A part of the cathedral complex today constitutes the church of St. Quirin, a beautiful example of the Romanesque sacral architecture. The first information about it dates back from 1335 when the people of Krk gave the rent from the island Plavnik "for the repair of the church of St. Quirin in Krk". It is assumed that it was built in the 12th century.

The bell tower of the Krk cathedral is situated at the northern front of St. Quirin. The place of its construction was determined by the Venetian provveditore Vinciguerra in 1489, and the construction finished in 1515.

Vela placa - Market place is the only town square preserving the characteristics of a square. It was first mentioned in 1263. The six-sided well on the square dates from the 16th century.
