Croatia: Summer Vacation, Day 2: Stinica

In the morning I took a quick walk with Bronco on the seaside and then I had to drove my car to Gračac, so that it will be available there when we end our hiking trip over the Velebit mountain range, hopefully in 10 days. Aleš also drove there with his car, so we could return back to Stinica. On the way back we stopped in Baške Oštarije, where we left some food. Our Velebit hiking trail runs across that village, so we thought it is a good idea to leave some weight there. In the evening we started the barbecue and the day quickly turned into night.

Previous day of our Summer Vacation 2024: Day 1 - 16206.

In order to transport logs from Velebit, Kombinat Velebit from Rijeka financed the construction of a freight cable car from Veliki Alan to Stinica in 1957, and it was built by prisoners from Goli otok. The cable car was 6,300 meters long, had 60 steel poles and three stations. The loading station was in Veliki Alan, the corner in Dundović Podi, and the unloading station in the sawmill and port of Stinica. It worked until 1968, when the Stinica sawmill also stopped working. After the cable car stopped working, the facility was left at the mercy of the mountain. The former log house has been converted into the "Alan" Mountain House, the neglected cable car carriers like unusual metal creatures welcome the many visitors who visit Alan and tell the story of another attempt by man to tame the mountain, which Velebit did not allow him this time. All the equipment was left to decay, devastation, theft of secondary raw materials, so that there is very little left of all that gives a hint of its former existence.

Slovenia /Austria: 4 Lakes With Motorcycle

After the morning walk with Bronco to Kršiše (Garmin Connect) we continued with plans on 2 wheels. Lefteris, my Greek friend from the Couchsurfing days was in Slovenia again, so we decided to have a motorbike ride. I planned a ride, where we visited 4 lakes and 2 countries and even Nada joined us. We all had a great afternoon on the motorbikes.

The GTI meeting was one of the world's largest Volkswagen meetings. Since 1982, it has taken place for four days (starting on the Wednesday before Ascension Day until the following Saturday) in Reifnitz / Ribnica on Lake Wörthersee Vrbsko jezero. The GTI meeting was founded in 1982 by Erwin Neuwirth with fewer than 100 participants and on its peak it had around 200000 visitors. In 2023 the municipality of Maria Wörth (Otok) decided not to host an event anymore.

Lefteris and Tuši.

The first lake that we visited was Vrbsko jezero - Wörthersee.

Framed in Baško jezero - Lake Faak.

We almost crossed the border in a tank.

Approaching Lake Kreda.

The lake got its name from the chalk (Slovene: kreda) that was mined in the area until 1985.

We separated near Lake Bled, where we left Lefteris behind and we continued back home. After 167 km we arrived to home in our village.

Earth: Goodbye Angie

Almost 10 years ago (12713), 3483 days to be exact, I bought Toyota Auris, and immediately we started calling her Angie. She proved to be a very reliable car and after almost 350000 km, she decided to go to Bulgaria. We all wish her a pleasant stay there and many more safe kilometers. Farewell, Angie!

Time for the last ride with our Angie. Direction Kranj and then Bulgaria.

397966 without any major issues. Well done!

Bronco knew, that something was going on, so he didn't want to leave his space in Angie.

Slovenia: Lokovnikov Grintovec and Košutica

Loibler Baba (also Ljubeljska Baba, Košutica or just simple Baba) is a scenic mountain located north of the western ridge of Košuta. I decided to conquer the peak via the north face, where an abandoned path leads to the top, but first I picked up a geocache on nearby Lokovnikov Grintovec, that also offers some mazing views to nearby peaks. I descended to mountain pasture Korošica, where I had a break. In the middle of each September, the cattle, that lived there during the Summer, leaves the pastures and retunes back to the valley, so I helped my friends to escort 18 of them them back home - Garmin Connect.

Arriving to mountain pasture Korošica.

Time to leave Slovenia and enter Austria.

View from Lokovnikov Grintovec to Grlovec on the North.

View towards West with Begunjščica, Triglav, Stol and Vrtača.

My destination, Košutica.

View to Košuta ridge and its northern wall.

Just following the ridge straight ahead to the summit via Gerhard Orasch path.

Mountain pasture Korošica from top of Košutica, 1968 m.

Met a friend on the way down - Vipera berus or common European viper.

Finally time for a break.

In the end, we escorted 18 cows back to the valley.
