Croatia / Slovenia: Poreč, Bašarinka, Tar and Cingarela

Nada and me did a city tour in Poreč for breakfast. Soon we started our journey towards Slovenia and on the way we stopped in a cave Bašarinka. Another quick stop was made in the village called Tar and for the end we visited the waterfall Cingarela.

The town of Poreč is almost 2000 years old, and is set around a harbour protected from the sea by the small island of Sveti Nikola/San Nicola (Saint Nicholas).

During the 2nd century BC, a Roman castrum was built on a tiny peninsula with approximate dimensions of 400 m × 200 m where the town centre of Poreč is now. During the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century BC, it officially became a city and was part of the Roman colony of Colonia Iulia Parentium.

The most valuable cultural property in Poreč, the Euphrasian Basilica, was registered on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997.  The early-Christian compound is the only complete landmark in the world preserved from that period.

Sightseeing

Round tower was built in 1475. Its erection was ordered by town podesta Pietro de Mula.

We visited the Great temple and temple of Neptune.

We left Poreč and entered the Bašarinka cave. The smell at the entrance almost killed us. Shame on all garbage throwers.

The total length of the cave is 68 with the maximum width of the hall 22 m and a height of about 10 m. The floor of the underground hall is horizontal and filled with thick layers of quaternary sediments.

In the old documents, Tar is mentioned in 983.

Even though we found bananas, this region is more famed for its exceptional olive oil. FAO experts have declared that the finest olive oil in Europe comes from these very parts, from Larun olive groves below Tar-Torre.

And the surprise. The hidden waterfall was dry. We'll have to come back after some rain.
