Croatia: Obrovac, Krupa and Zrmanja

After a mountain biking day, Nada and me explored an area around Zrmanja river. Our points of interest were fortress ruins from the 13th century in Obrovac and Krupa Canyon with a confluence with Zrmanja river.

We woke up near Karin Sea, a bay in the Adriatic Sea

Good morning

Grounded

Lost place

Fortress from the 13th century.

Obrovac is a town on the Zrmanja River some 11 km from the mouth of the river of the Novigrad sea.

Leaving the ruins

We moved on and started descending towards the confluence of Krupa and Zrmanja rivers

Zrmanja is 69 km long river and was known to the ancient Romans as Tedanius.

Confluence

River Zrmanja drops down over appr. 9 meters and the waterfall is called Visoki buk.

Hike upstream along Krupa

Goats and guard dogs were safe on the other side of the river

Both the Zrmanja and Krupa flow through karstic terrain - resulting in rough canyons in some stretches, rich, green karst fields in others.

Next time we'll come here with a boat

One of many waterfalls along our way

Just nature and us

Time to cross the river

Even though it was december, the water wasn't too cold

Quickest way to the other side, where the path continued

Soon our feet were clean

Mantises were considered to have supernatural powers by early civilizations.

Another set of waterfalls along the Krupa

Below the bridge called "Kudin most".

One of the most beautiful parts of the river is "Kudin Most" or Kuda's bridge, a protected monument from the 18th century. The legend tells that the bridge was built by Kude, a young man who was in love but who was separated from his love by the river Krupa.

Waterfalls above the bridge

This time we crossed the river with the help of the bridge

Deveterac was named after nine trawl cascades that end with a waterfall over which the Kuda's Bridge still stands.

The path continues, but we had other plans

Cascades

Logging the geocache

Leaving the canyon

Kude built the bridge with his brothers in the drywall technique out of twisted blocks with 12 arches and columns that merged the banks of the Krupa river.

Goodbye Krupa

On our way back to the car we passed by Greek pond.

Towards the Golubić village

Back to civilization
