Malta: Day 10: Marsaskala

Over the last two years, there have been more passengers on Maltese buses than the population of Germany. Today Nada and me took the public transport and left our apartment in Buġibba. Even though Malta is small, we found it more convenient to change the apartment, than to drive to the other side of the island. Our pick was Marsaskala, a sea-side village in the South Eastern Region. After we arrived, we first met the local pub and then we went for a nice walk around the area. For the cherry on top we had a great dinner in a Tal-Familja restaurant.

Previous days of our trip to Malta: Day 9Day 8Day 7Day 6Day 5Day 4Day 3,  Day 2 and Day 1.

The parish church of Marsaskala is dedicated to Santa Anna, like in my home village.

Built around a small natural harbour, Marsaskala has been popular with fishermen since antiquity, and continues to be popular even today.

The Maltese name for Marsaskala is Wied il-Għajn, or Valley of the Spring

The formation process of the salt begins when sea water starts to fill crevices in the coastline.
This sea water is left to settle for eight days before it is moved to smaller salt pans that are warmer in temperature and further away from the sea.
