Slovenia: Afternoon GeoCaching

After work I picked up 2 caches near Ljubljana and then Nada joined me. On our way to White Carniola we picked up 9 caches near Višnja gora on a nice hiking trail.

Over Sava river

Gramozna jama (gravel pit) in Ljubljana is a quiet place of remembrance for the many crimes committed by fascists and nazis in the Second World War in the Province of Ljubljana. In 1942 and 1943 Italian occupiers executed Slovenian hostages in the Gramozna jama - as reimbursement for Liberation Front and partisans' campaigns. Executed were also those found with weapons, counter Italian propaganda or those considered to help Liberation Front. In 1944 some hostages have been shot by the German occupiers here too – but they carried out far more executions elsewhere. The memorial designed by the architect Vinko Glanz was finished in 1957. It has a central obelisk and four columns with engraved names of the hostages. At the site of executions bronze sculpture of a dying hostage by sculptor Boris Kalin was placed in 1967.
