Kenya: Day 4: Mount Kenya, Part 2

The night was quite cold, more than I expected. We woke up at sunrise and started packing. Just when we wanted to leave, the camp manager wanted us that we pay for the camp. We had a 10 minute argument, I also talked to his boss over the phone, but since the lady, that sold us the park tickets yesterday said that the camping is free, we left. The camp manager had enough time yesterday to inform us about the rules, if there are any, so we left without any hard feelings.

The track started to ascend quite quickly and we reached 4000 meters in less than 4 hours. Then the track continued on almost flat area for another 5 kilometres and as usual, backpacks were heavier and heavier and also the height took its share, nevertheless we arrived to the destination before 15:00.

This time we asked at the hut where we can camp for free and then we found a nice spot near the spring with a view to the highest peaks of Mount Kenya, Batian and Nelion. Here the water was drinkable so we just cooked dinner. Since we had small headaches we took some pils (AspirinGinkgo biloba pills and garlic). Rumours are, that they help at least a little bit against altitude sickness.

Since the darkness falls almost instantly after sunset, there is almost no twilight near equator, we went to bed early, as usual.
