Australia: Day 04: Sydney: Watsons Bay to Coogee Beach walk

My host Paul was still busy, so I decided to explore the seaside region, south from Port Jackson, but first I decided to buy a tent, that I will need in the near future, possibly in Blue Mountains or Snowy Mountains. Cheapest 2 person tent cost me AUS$ 49.99. Soon after that I boarded the ferry and I was on my way to Watsons Bay.

Ferry ticket, AUS$ 5.80

Arrived to Watsons Bay

Let's explore the area around Military Reserve to the North first

Sydney Harbour anti-submarine boom net was placed from this point to the other side to Georges Head during World War II. For over three years all ships including ferries and fishing boats had to pass through one of the three gates in the anti-torpedo and anti-midget submarine boom.

Hornby Lighthouse marks the southern entrance to Port Jackson. The need for a lighthouse at the entrance of Jackson Bay was made evident by the loss of two ships. First was the Dunbar, wrecked in August 1857, with the loss of 121 lives. The second was Catherine Adamson, two months later in October 1857, with a loss of twenty-one lives.

The Gap is an ocean cliff on the South Head peninsula in eastern Sydney, New South Wales. The area, which faces the Tasman Sea, is located in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay, in the Municipality of Woollahra, near South Head. Although the cliff is a popular visitor destination, it has gained infamy for suicides.

The Dunbar was wrecked about 500 yards south of this spot. On the night of 20 August 1857, the ship approached the entrance to Sydney Harbour from the south, but heavy rain and a strong gale made navigating difficult. Out of total 122 people on board there was only one survivor. This anchor was recovered 50 years later and is now set up in memory of the tragic event.

I continued south, where I saw the Macquarie Lighthouse. Known also as South Head Upper Light, it was the first, and is the longest serving, lighthouse site in Australia. There has been a navigational aid in this vicinity since 1791 and a lighthouse near the present site since 1818.
