Austria: Backcountry Skiing - Kozjak
Ovčji vrh or Kozjak in Slovene, or Geissberg or Kosiak in German, is a 2024 m high peak located north of the main ridge of the Karavanke Mountains. In winter, it is also popular with skiers, so my cousin Aleks and me decided to conquer it. A little more than 1000 meters of ascent and we were standing on the summit, where there were already many people. Still, we were able to find some virgin lines on our way down - Garmin Connect. As it it normal for trips like this, we finished it with a beer on our way back home.
We started on a forest road that the locals had prepared for sledders, hikers, and skiers.
After a while, we came out of the forest to a mountain pasture Mačenska planina. We immediately saw some nice options for us to ski.
View towards the main ridge of the Karawanks. To dangerous to ski today. |
Finally, the summit at 2024 m. |
One last look towards East, before we started enjoying our fresh powder snow. |
