Austria / Slovenia: Murau and Tea's 40

Nada, Bronco and me were finishing our New Year's vacation and after the morning walk we left our nice apartment in Pöllau am Greim. Our goal on the way home was to explore the city of Murau in Styria. We visited the St Matthew's parish church, Murau Castle and had a nice walk along the river Mur. Soon we left the city and we set our navigation device to home.

In the evening we drove to Bled, where we attended Tea's surprise party for her 40th birthday. Congratulations Tea and cheers!

Morning walk with Bronco.

The historic town of Murau is located in mountainous Upper Styria in the valley of the Mur river between the Lower Tauern range and the Gurktal Alps.

The river Mur was attested as Maura in AD 799, Muora in 890, Mura in 1259, Mvr and Mver in 1310, and Muer in 1354. The name is probably of Slavic origin, nominalized from the adjective *murъ 'dark', meaning "dark water".

The church building is halfway up the southern castle slope and is surrounded by an old churchyard wall.

View to the city from the castle.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein, known as the Minnesinger, built the first castle on the Murauer Schlossberg around 1232.

Obermurau Castle has remained the property of the Schwarzenberg family.

Along the river Mur, that runs through 4 countries, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary.

Over Drava and Danube, the river flows into the Black Sea.

The town's economy largely depends on tourism, especially in the nearby Kreischberg ski resort. It is also known for its brewing tradition (Murauer Bier) documented since the 15th century.

Goodbye Murau, Austria.

Happy Birthday Tea!
