Austria / Slovenia: Backcountry Skiing turned into GeoCaching

Nada and me packed our car with skis and we drove to Austria towards the village towards Kaning, just above the Radenče / Radenthein. We parked our car near the abandoned manganese mine. Unfortunately the conditions were quite bad for skiing, the wind was very strong and we would have to carry our skis on our backs for too long, so we changed our plans. We decided to go back to the valley and do some GeoCaching. We looked for them in villages Radenče and Obernšec / Feld am See and also on our way to the geocaching event called "Pozdravimo 2020! 🥂 Willkommen 2020!".

For many years, garnet gemstones were mined in Radenče and shipped to Bohemian jewel cutters, who turned the stones into seductively sparkling Bohemian Garnets.

We visited the Kaningbach Gorge behind the Granatium.

 

Our next stop was Obrnšec - Feld am See.

 

The Mirnock giant was passionately in love with fisherman's beautiful daughter so he kidnapped her and took her to a mountain cave. The despaired father outwitted the giant with a bottle of herb schnapps and feed his daughter. That enraged the giant so much, that he crashed the mountain top down to the valley and since then Lake Afritzersee and Lake Brennsee have been separated.

 

Brennsee is also called Feldsee.

The lake called Brennsee was named after a local tavern and distillery (Brenn) which was founded in 1632.

 

Geocaching takes you to very strange locations - rock called Hinkelstein.

Back in Slovenia, where we did a short hike to a geocaching event.
