Italy / Austria: Cycling turned into GeoCaching
It was raining all night, tent started to leak so we had to wake up. Cold. I left the tent and went into the car, where I checked the temperature outside. 5 degrees only. We quickly decided, that a plan change is needed, since it will be even colder on the high mountain passes, freezing on descends.
First, we changed cycling into geocaching and second, we decided to return home and not to stay one more day. In Camping Sass Dlacia, they were kind enough, that they didn't charge us for one night stay only (they didn't know that, but thanks anyway) and we were on our way back home.

This church was built by the Alpine soldiers of A.N.A. Group Cortina d' Ampezzo in memory of soldiers of Europe who faced each other here on the frontlines of the Dolomites during WW1. The original chapel, reconstructed here, was part of a village based in these woods behind the Italian frontline consisting of huts, warehouses and accommodation for the infantry and the Alpine troops stationed along the Lagazuoi and Tofane front. Inside the chapel the Italian, Austro-Hungarian and German battalions based in this area are remembered. The church was built in a spirit of peace and remembrance for the suffering of all the soldiers. |
