GermanyBerlin, Day 2

On our second day in Berlin we visited two major attractions, Reichstag building and Spy Museum Berlin. To visit the Reichstag, you have to make an online appointment in advance and since it is free of charge, it is definitely worth visiting. Spy Museum covers many topics about espionage, from history, usage in wars, industry, cryptology, spy gear, secret services and so on.

The Reichstag is now the second most visited attraction in Germany, not least because of the huge glass dome that was erected on the roof as a gesture to the original 1894 cupola, giving an impressive view over the city, especially at night.

Construction of the building began well after the unification of Germany in 1871.

Eight hundred tons of steel and 3000 square meters of glass went into building this dome, which is 23.5 meters high, while 360 mirrors provide daylight to the newly designed plenary chamber.

The Reichstag is an internationally recognizable symbol of democracy and the current home of the German parliament. The original building is designed by Paul Wallot and modeled after the Memorial Hall in Philadelphia. Decorative motifs, sculptures and mosaics are contributed by the artist Otto Lessing.

The Soviet War Memorial in Tiergarten is one of several war memorials in Berlin, erected by the Soviet Union to commemorate its war dead, particularly the 80000 soldiers of the Soviet Armed Forces who died during the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945. This memorial was erected in 1945, within a few months of the capture of the city. Although the memorial stood in the British sector of Berlin, its construction was supported by all the Allied powers.

Komponistendenkmal - Beethoven-Haydn-Mozart Memorial is an outdoor 1904 memorial to the classical composers Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart located in Tiergarten.

After the initial opening of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, Potsdamer Platz became one of the earliest locations where the Wall was "breached" to create a new border crossing between East and West Berlin. The crossing began operating on 11 November 1989, earlier than the iconic Brandenburg Gate crossing which opened more than a month later.

The Spy Museum Berlin gives a unique insight into the gloom of espionage right where the Wall once divided the city.
