Germany: Pearl Jam in Waldbühne

Our concert day arrived and before that we explored the former West Berlin area.

West Berlin was formally controlled by the Western Allies and was entirely surrounded by the Soviet-controlled East Berlin and East Germany. West Berlin had great symbolic significance during the Cold War, as it was widely considered by westerners as an "island of freedom".

The first attraction we visited was the Siegessäule - Berlin Victory Column. It was designed by Heinrich Strack, after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War.

More than 60 meters up - The Victory Column originally stood in Königsplatz (now Platz der Republik), at the end of the Siegesallee (Victory Avenue). In 1939, as part of the preparation of the monumental plans to redesign Berlin into Welthauptstadt Germania, the Nazis relocated the column to its present site at the Großer Stern (Great Star), a large intersection on the city axis that leads from the former Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace) through the Brandenburg Gate to the western parts of the city. At the same time, the column was augmented by another 7.5 metres, giving it its present height of 66.89 metres.

View to the East, where the straight The Straße des 17. Juni leads to Brandenburger Tor.

Posing with 35 tonne Victoria, sometimes called Goldelse.

Entering Tiergarten, 210 hectares large urban garden.

Snoopy also visited Berlin

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was heavily damaged in a bombing raid in 1943 and is now a famous landmark of western Berlin, and is nicknamed by Berliners "der hohle Zahn", meaning "the hollow tooth". H Van was standing nearby.

Short break on Breitscheidplatz, the centre of former West Berlin and the present-day City West.

Inside the new Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. The walls of the church are made of a concrete honeycomb containing 21,292 stained glass inlays.

We left the central area and started walking towards our concert place. On our way we quickly stopped by the Oberverwaltungsgericht - Higher Administrative Court.

Charlottenburg Palace, the largest palace in Berlin, was built at the end of the 17th century. The original palace was commissioned by Sophie Charlotte, the wife of Friedrich III, Elector of Brandenburg in what was then the village of Lietzow.

During the Second World War, the palace was badly damaged but has since been reconstructed.

Cleaning the dirty feet

The garden was designed in 1697 in baroque style by Simeon Godeau who had been influenced by André Le Nôtre, designer of the gardens at Versailles

Olympiastadion was originally built by Werner March for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the Olympics, the record attendance was thought to be over 100,000.
