Macedonia / Greece: Vacation time, Day 7: Thessaloniki - Solun
Time for annual leave has come and with Nada we decided to have a motorbike trip, starting in Slovenia and ending on Crete in Greece. On our way we decided to spend some time with our friends in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and in Greece.
Our days in Macedonia came to the end and thanks to Saška and Vlado we had a great time. For our 7th day of our vacation we went back in the saddle and we started riding towards Greece. This time we were not in a hurry, so we enjoyed the local roads.
Soon we were at the border and without any issues we continued towards our destination, Thessaloniki. Just before the 2nd largest city in Greece we stopped by the church Agia Paraskevi church in Oraiokastro, where we had quick lunch break.
At 3 p.m. we finally met our host, Nicoletta. We haven't seen each other for more than a year (13593). She "cooked" us great lunch and showed us our room and in the evening we went for a short walk around the city.
Previous days of our vacation: Day 6, Day 5, Day 4, Day 3, Day 2, Day 1.
Crazy Mara (in Macedonian: Luda Mara) is a small river, which really gets crazy during heavy rains and fills this Lake Paljurci |

Thessaloniki has many stories to tell, starting by the moment of its foundation in 316/315 B.C. Fortunate to have royal “blood”, since the new city was named after Thessalonike, sister of Alexander the Great and daughter of Philip II, King of Macedonia, it was developed rapidly - due to its prominent geographical location - as one of the most important ports, and economical and commercial centers of Macedonia and the Balkan Peninsula as a whole, advantages maintained for the past 2300 years.

Alexander the Great created one of the largest empires of the ancient world by the age of thirty, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history's most successful military commanders. |
